At this seasonal time of year us horror fans are usually left out in the cold (get it?), with the food and alcohol flowing freely, rest assured our cinematic delights are well enough quenched.
This a a short list of some of the best Christmas horror out there, and ones I’ll be more than likely watched on the days before, after, and into, the new year.
Let’s get started!
1. 36 15 Code Pere Noel (Psycho Santa Claus vs Bloody Home Alone Christmas Horror)(1989)
It’s Christmas Eve, and a psycho, just fired from his job, in a Santa Claus costume enters the house of her former boss. There the boss’s son and his grampa will try to survive whatever the cost.
Also known as Game Over, it’s a kind of dark, bloody version of Home Alone.
2. Black Christmas (1974)
A sorority house is terrorized by a stranger who makes frightening phone calls and then murders the sorority sisters during Christmas break.
3. Santa’s Slay (2004)
Jolly old Saint Nick goes from the nice list to the naughty list when an old wager runs up and his promise to be nice takes a backseat to his murderous impulses in this comic tale of terror from first-time director David Steiman. It turns out that the story of Santa Claus as we know it isn’t quite the whole story, and instead of being a kind hearted gift-giver, Santa is actually a devilish life-taker.
4. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
After his parents are murdered, a young tormented teenager goes on a murderous rampage dressed as Santa, due to his stay at an orphanage where he was abused by the Mother Superior.
5. Jack Frost 1 & 2 (1996)
A serial killer dies, comes back as a snowman, and wreacks havoc.
6. Rare Exports (2010)
In the depths of the Korvatunturi mountains, 486 metres deep, lies the closest ever guarded secret of Christmas. The time has come to dig it up! This Christmas everyone will believe in Santa Claus.
7. Silent Night, Bloody Night (1974)
The secrets of a small New England town are violently exposed on Christmas Eve in this proto-slasher shocker. The owner of the long-abandoned Butler estate is desperate to sell, and dispatches his lawyer from New York to negotiate its purchase by the town council. Meanwhile, an inmate from a nearby insane asylum breaks loose and makes his way to the old mansion to take bloody revenge for a crime kept hidden for 35 years.
8. Don’t Open Till Christmas (1983)
Somebody with very little Christmas spirit is killing anyone in a Santa suit one London holiday season, and Scotland Yard has to stop him before he makes his exploits an annual tradition.
9. Christmas Evil (You Better Watch Out) (1980)
A psycho in a Santa suit gets to decide who’s been naughty and who’s been nice.
10. New Year’s Evil (1988)
During a New Year’s Eve celebration, a punk-rock singer gets a phone call saying that when New Year’s strikes in each time zone, someone will be murdered – - and she will be the last one.
